Short-eared Owl Asio flammeus winter diet in Denmark. The winter diet of Short-eared Owl in Denmark was  studied                            by pellet analysis. In total, 957 pellets from ten sites were analysed (Tabs 1 and 2). In total, 980 animal remains were
found; distributed on 17 species (Tab. 3). Of these, 98.5% were mammals and 1.3% birds. A single frog and a geotrupid
beetle were also identified. Among the mammals, Microtus-voles dominated at nine sites, while water voles dominated
on an island where they were superabundant during the collection year. The study confirms that the Short-eared Owl is

an opportunistic feeder, utilising the most abundant prey at the particular winter site.
